James Blain (1878 - 1963) was born in Kilmarnock and painted in Ayrshire and particularly enjoyed painting scenes of Arran and the Glasgow area, where he lived for most of his life.  He painted in both water-colours and oils.  

He exhibited mostly after World War II at The Glasgow Institute and The Paisley Art Institute as well as at the annual Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour exhibitions.  The Dick Institute in Kilmarnock (run by East Ayrshire Leisure) holds a painting by the artist in its collection.
